Shoe Bags

Following on from the idea of hanging storage on the previous page, here are some useful cloth bags that have been personalized with photographs. The ones pictured are intended for carrying shoes but you could adapt them to another purpose.
A special solution is used to transfer the photographic image to fabric and the technique is straightforward - but be sure to read the manufacturer's instructions carefully.

Materials & Equipment

Dylon Image Maker
white fabric
sheet of plastic
paintbrush
kitchen paper
roller
scissors

Step-by-Step

1 Make a photocopy - color or black- and-white - of the photograph you wish to transfer.Trim the image to the shape and size you want, then cover it with a coat of the image transfer solution, brushing it on thickly and evenly.

2 Place the fabric on a piece of plastic, then put the coated picture face down on the fabric. Cover with a piece of kitchen paper and press down, using
a roller.

3 Remove the kitchen paper and leave to dry for at least four hours, or overnight.
4 Remove the paper from the transfer by rubbing with a damp sponge, then leave to dry.Trim the fabric, leaving a 1 cm (l/2in) border all round the image, fold under raw edges, then stitch in place.

THE IMAGES USED FOR THESE BAGS EACH MEASURE 10CM (4 IN) SQUARE. TO MAKE AN UNLINED BAG, CUT A PIECE OF PLAIN FURNISHING FABRIC 60CM X 30CM (24 IN X 12 IN). PlN THE FABRIC PICTURE IN
POSITION AND MACHINE STITCH IN PLACE WITH A CLOSE ZIGZAG, THEN FOLD IN HALF WITH RIGHT SIDES FACING AND STITCH THE TWO SIDE SEAMS OF THE BAG. CUT A PIECE OF BINDING FROM CONTRASTING FABRIC, 6CM (2 1/2IN) WIDE, AND USE TO BIND THE TOP EDGES AND MAKE HANDLES.
