SAPONIFICATION (SOFTENING) OF OIL PAINT ON SURFACES REMEDY

SAPONIFICATION (SOFTENING) OF OIL PAINT ON SURFACES

Description
A strong active alkaline surface can in certain instances soften up and destroy oil- painted surfaces, turning the paint into soapy masses which often exude running areas of brown sticky liquid.

Cause
• Active alkaline salts, which are sometimes present in cement or in the mixing water used for the rendering of bricks.

Remedy
Completely strip off the affected paint. Clean the surface. Make sure that the surface is dry before re-painting.

Note: Alkali-resisting primer is useful before painting.
